The 2018 Toyota Camry has gone on sale in Australia, with slight pricing increases, but ostensibly mirroring the outgoing Camry and Aurion’s pricing, despite new technology.
The new range is marked by a new model name strategy, which sees Altise replaced by Ascent, with Atara supplanted by Ascent Sport, SX and SL flagship.
Built atop Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) chassis, the engine range differs from overseas Camrys, with the carry over 2.5-litre 133kW, 231Nm four-cylinder base engine and six-speed auto. Further up the range, a new Hybrid powertrain with the ‘Dynamic Force’ 2.5-litre four-cylinder and hybrid system totals 160kW of power. The new V6 engine generates a potent 224kW at 6600rpm and 362Nm at 4700rpm, connected to a new eight-speed auto.
The new chassis is 30 per cent stiffer, 25mm lower for superior road-holding and a 40mm lower bonnet. Camry firsts include 10-inch heads-up display on some models, electronic park brake, the availability of 19-inch alloys, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. Toyota’s senior divisional manager of sales and marketing, Sean Hanley said:
