2019 Volvo S60 revealed, new high-performance Polestar Engineered model

The 2019 Volvo S60 has been officially revealed, with two petrol and two hybrid engine options, but no diesel this time around.

Like the XC90, S90, V90 and XC60 and V60 it utilises the Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) rather than the smaller Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) co-developed with parent Geely.

The new S60 borrows heavily from its bigger brothers style-wise, but still keeps the trademark curved taillamp signature and swoopy roofline of its forebear. It is 4761mm long, 2040mm wide (with mirrors), 1431mm tall and sits on a wheelbsae of 2872mm, putting it at the larger end of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-class premium midsize segment.

Available engines include a 183kW, 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder in the T5 that can accelerate to 100km/h in 6.5-seconds, a T6 which adds a supercharger for a total of 228kW and all-wheel drive, the T8 twin-engine plug-in hybrid that generates a total of 287kW, combining a 222kW petrol engine with a 65kW electric motor, using its staggering 640Nm to accelerate to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 250km/h.

A new sporting flagship arrives in the ‘Polestar Engineered’ model, which ups the ante to 304kW and 670Nm, taking the fight to the BMW M3 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrofoglio.

The S60 is underpinned by a double wishbone front suspension with integral link IRS. The Sensus Connect portrait touchscreen features inside, while as you’d expect, the full suite of Pilot Assist and City Safety features help Volvo’s goal to have zero fatalities in its cars by 2020.

A new factory in Charleston, South Carolina has broken ground, and the S60 will be built here alongside the next-generation XC90 due in 2021, but it’s unclear if Australian-delivered S60s will come from that factory, or Sweden, or China when it arrives here next year.
